Interior Design Tips: Create a Focal Point
Decorating a small room can be a challenge. Clutter can make a small room seem cramped and unusable. A way to solve this problem is to create a focal point so that the room looks larger and feels more functional.
A focal point is a feature in the room that draws the eye. Rather than noticing the 'smallness' of a room, a person first notices the focal point. Furniture and color can create this focal point. A minimalist design technique, using multi-functional pieces of furniture, is a key ingredient in creating the illusion of more space.
A small room will seem even smaller if it is cluttered with lots of furniture, regardless of whether the furniture is large and bulky or is small. It is preferable to use just one or two key pieces of furniture in order to make the small room feel more spacious and functional. Make sure that furniture is not blocking pathways in the small room. To create the illusion of more space, place tall furniture or large furniture against one of the walls instead of in the middle of the room.
Look for basic furniture that offers hidden storage. Some ottomans, benches and beds are designed with compartments suitable for storing everything from linens to books or tableware. To save money, use items you may already have. For example, a family heirloom trunk can be converted into a great coffee table and conversation piece. Obviously, the trunk can also serve as a storage area. End tables and shelves often have built-in drawers for storage, but make sure that the room is not crowded with too many pieces of this type of furniture.
Futons are a fantastic furniture option for decorating small rooms. Available in dozens of styles and sizes, some futon models come with storage built into them. It will not take up as much room as a bed, couch or futon sofa. Inexpensive yet colorful accessories can be used to create a focal point. A vibrantly colored rug or piece of artwork will definitely accomplish this. Colorful slipcovers or throw pillows on sofas and chairs can also draw the eye. If using futon furniture, there are hundreds of affordable futon cover designs, ranging from striking, solid colors to artistic patterns. Many of these futon covers are machine washable, so an occasional spill will not result in costly upholstery cleaning services.
It is easy to breathe some life and space into a small room by combining the right furnishings, layout and color schemes.
